IMPORTANT QUESTIONS FOR ENGLISH STUDENTS TO ANSWER.

(Very important questions for the English tutor to ask the English student!)

When I talk with a new potential student of English, I have a standard set of questions that I ask.
  • Can you read English?
  • How often do you read English?
  • What do you read in English? (Articles, books, fiction, non-fiction....)
  • When you find a word you do not know, what do you do?
  • Do you understand English better when you read or when you listen?
  • How often do you listen to English?
  • When you listen to English, what do you listen to?
  • When you listen, do you translate in your mind?
  • When you read English, do you read silently to yourself, do you read out loud to yourself, or do you do a bit of both?
  • Can you write English using a pen?
  • Can you write English using a keyboard?
  • How often do you write in English?
  • How often do you write English using a pen? Keyboard?
  • What do you write in English? 
  • Do you write English at work or school?
  • When someone talks to you in English, if they speak fast, how is it for you? Can you understand what they say?
  • If they speak slowly, do you understand what they are saying to you?
  • What do you do when someone speaks too fast for you to understand what they are saying?
  • Do you speak English everyday?
  • How often do you speak English?
  • Do you speak English to native English speakers?
  • When you speak English, do you sometimes notice that you think in your native language and then speak English?
  • When you talk in English, do you sometimes notice that you don't always remember some words you want to use?
  • Do you notice that later, maybe ten minutes later, an hour later, maybe the next day, you remember the word you wanted to use?
  • What is your greatest weakness with the English language?
  • What is your greatest strength with the English language?
  • How great do you want to become in the English language?
  • What is your goal with the English language?
  • How important is it to you to reach your goal with the English language? Is it extremely important? Very important? Somewhat important? Important? Not that important? Not very important? Not at all important? You don't care if you reach your goal?
  • Have you taken any English fluency tests like IELTS, TOFL, TOEIC and so on?
  • If yes, what were the results of your tests overall and in each category?
  • Are you planning on taking any English fluency tests in the future? If so, what test?
  • How much time do you have each day (realistically) to do English language homework by yourself?
  • How much time do you have each day to invest in reaching your goal with the English language?
  • What methods are you currently using to reach your goal with the English language?
  • WHY DO YOU WANT TO LEARN ENGLISH?
  • Do you need English for your work? School? Travel? Immigration?
I ask these questions to help the new student become aware of the fact that I want to find out more about their current English language skill.
The asking and answering of these questions help to break the ice. 

Please answer this question: "What is your greatest weakness with the English language?"

And now, answer this question: "What is your greatest strength with the English? language?"

And it does help me to figure out what to do to help the new student. 

Your answers to all these questions will help you to figure out what are your greatest strengths in English language training.

And it will give you some clarity about what you need to focus on. It is true that you may already know these things about your own English practice...but some of what you discover about yourself maybe a new angle, new insight...about what you can do to improve your English language skills.

In answering these questions, the new student gives me valuable insights into how skillful they are with the English language when it comes to:
  • VOCABULARY
  • BEING ABLE TO ANSWER SIMPLE DIAGNOSTIC QUESTIONS
  • CONVERSATIONAL COMPREHENSION
  • ATTITUDE TOWARDS LEARNING
Another valuable insight that I get is how teachable the student will be.

It helps me when the student begins to understand that I am going to be giving them a specific system best suited to their learning style AND to help them get the results that they want.

What really helps you to learn English is when you take action and do your homework...each and every day.

Your skill improves the more you practice and study English by using every cognitive method:
You will make real progress when you take full advantage of something called The Testing Effect.

Another important method involves using Spaced Repetition.

And when you add the rocket fuel of Pattern Recognition, your English language skill will become much more stable and ingrained in your mind.
