HOW TO REALLY UNDERSTAND SPOKEN & WRITTEN ENGLISH

By Robert Farmilo

This is one of the same methods I use to learn a foreign language. I have included links to the best online resources currently available.

What is it?

The Dictation Method
It Really Works!

Quickly Improves EVERY English Language Skill

Okay, so what do you do?

Read the lesson plan.
After you have read the lesson plan, scroll down and find the first dictation link.

You open up the FIRST link on this page, and sit down with your notebook and click on FIRST set of the ELEMENTARY exercises. You will hear English being spoken. You write down what you hear.

Then you check what you have written with the transcript of what you listened to. Correct any mistakes you have made.

Any words you do not know, add them to your New Words List.
Begin to actively use your new words following the method outlined in this lesson:

Realistic Expectations
What you can realistically expect to happen when you consistently practice this method?

  • Quicker understanding when people talk to you in English.

  • Your spelling of English words will get a lot better.

  • Speed up your ability to speak English more fluently.

  • Learn AND remember a lot more English vocabulary.

  • Help you with correct punctuation of written English.

  • Improve your reading skills.

  • Smooth out pronunciation problems.

  • Become closer and closer to being like a native English language speaker.

WARNING!
To have results with this method you MUST be consistent.
How often should you do it?
Do it six days a week OR five days a week.
(IF you can't do that, how about four days OR three days a week?)

How long should you do it?
30 to 60 minutes each time you practice this method.

Not able to do it for 30 minutes? Do it for as long as you can. If that is 25, 21, 17, 12, 9 minutes...whatever you can squeeze in is better than nothing.

Tools you need to really get the full results:
  • Notebook
  • Pen or pencil
  • Laptop OR mobile phone OR computer
  • Someplace to do it
  • Quiet really helps
  • If not quiet space, then a headset, headphones

I have included a list of FREE online dictation resources for you to use. Please read how to use the resources before you start the exercises.

HOW TO USE THE DICTATION RESOURCES

I recommend you start with the first link. Click the link and then start with the ELEMENTARY exercises. Begin with the first section called QUESTIONS. Start at exercise number one. Do each one of the exercises.

TWO IMPORTANT STEPS
When you have completed one dictation exercise and written what you have heard, these next two steps are going to take your listening comprehension skill to the next level.

ONE: Repeat the words out loud, in English. Imitate the way you hear the words being pronounced. Say the words out loud several times. Your main goal is to be able to repeat the words easily, without stumbling over the pronunciation. It may take you several attempts to begin to get the flow. Remember to imitate the way you are hearing the words being spoken.

TWO: Translate what you have written in English into your own, native language. Write your translation in your own native language. Do NOT use a translation tool like Google Translate or CHAT GPT.

After you have translated the English into your own language, verify your translation is correct by using a translation tool like Google Translate or CHAT GPT.

If you made some mistakes in your written translation, correct your mistakes. Now you are ready to complete the next exercise.

When finished, start on the next section, NUMBERS AND LETTERS, and when completed, start the next section, and so on.

Once you have completed ALL the exercises, begin the INTERMEDIATE level. After finishing ALL the INTERMEDIATE level exercises, begin and complete all the ADVANCED level exercises.

I can promise you measurable results if you use this method for 90 days, and do it for 30 to 60 minutes each time.

What measurable results mean is you will notice a VAST improvement in your English language skills.

Remember to take a one day vacation after doing this method every six days. This means take the day off. Don't do any dictation practice.

I recommend you take one complete day off each week from ANY English language training...if you are a serious English student who is practicing every day for two or more hours each day.

If you want results, you will have to put the work in over a period of time. After you complete the first 90 day period of doing this dictation method, that will not be the moment to stop doing this method. No.

The more you do this method over a long period of time, the better you are going to get at listening to and understanding what you are hearing when someone speaks to you in English.

And when you open your mouth to speak English, you will notice that the words you need will come faster into your mouth.

Your writing skills will dramatically improve. So don't spare the horses! Onward!
