HOW TO PASS THE IELTS ACADEMIC OR GENERAL TEST

This is one of the most frequent questions I get asked: "TEACHER, TEACHER! HOW TO GET THE HIGH BAND SCORE IN IELTS?" (Academic or General?)

by

"Teacher, what is the best way to study for the IELTS test?"

Good question.
You may not like the answer.
To prepare for the test, you need to take practice tests over and over. This is the best way to study for the test.

AND best links ever for SERIOUS test preparation.
)

You have four superpowers to master.

  1. READING
  2. WRITING
  3. LISTENING
  4. SPEAKING
NEXT?
YOU MUST USE A TIMER. Yes, the stopwatch, with the alarm.

You MUST use a timer (stopwatch with alarm) when you take each practice test.
Just like in real life.
You practice with the pressure of time ticking away.
This gets you somewhat ready for the "test day" reality of very limited time.
Time to complete each question.

IF you are NOT prepared for this pressure of time slipping away while being tested, bottom line is...your performance will be negatively impacted.

That is one of the main reasons to time yourself.
Also, you are FORCED to finish each part of each test on time.

You get some serious practice of finishing your writing answers with more word count and still writing when they call time.

The listening test...well, you're all over that. You have practiced a lot and know what to expect, more or less. It isn't easy to keep track of the pertinent information...but you've been practicing a lot. You know how to jot down key bits of information during the test.

Same with the speaking, right? You've got your own style going on, and it flows.

But the reading, especially the academic test...yikes!
You will be so glad you used this method that has been revealed to you in this lesson.

BIG IMPORTANT is this: record what you do not know. The big take-a-way is to NOTICE what you do not know. Keep a record of this. Now you begin to change what you do not know to what you do know.

So, that's about it.
Except for the FACT that this method requires ONE secret ingredient. Best summed up in this proverb:
"See the job, do the job, stay out of the misery."

Some students tell me that they want a good band score but they get bored with the listening or the reading...and writing? Forget about it.
What to do?
Sigh.
You are going to really get a bad result on your test.

What is the solution?
24 hour complete and TOTAL immersion in the English language for two years.
During this time you will also attend classes five days a week. Each day you will study (in class)
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Listening
  • Speaking
During this two year intensive immersion program, it is best to keep your own language use to personal communication with family and friends back home.

The advanced immersion program includes a clause

Doing test after test BEFORE you take the real test will get you ready for the ticking clock pressure.
